Info: Provides instructions for how to run Prognosticator 2009 from a network drive. [Updated for January 2009]

Posted: 1/1/2008
Revised: 1/21/2009
Applies To: Prognosticator 2009

Symptoms
Prognosticator 2009 crashes with the message "PROG2009 has encountered a problem and needs to close," when trying to run it from a network drive.

Cause
This is due to a configuration issue with the .NET Framework.  By default the .NET Framework restricts code from running from a network drive.  This behavior is by design and is part of the .NET Framework and is not a problem with Prognosticator 2009.

Resolution - Basic [Recommended]
Uninstall Prognosticator 2009 and reinstall it to a local drive (typically C:\).

Resolution - Advanced

Warning:  The steps in this section are intended for advanced users only!

To run Prognosticator 2009 from a network drive a configuration change must be made to the .NET Framework settings.  To change the settings, access the .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration control panel located in Administrative Tools.

In the configuration tool:

  • Expand the "My Computer" node.
  • Expand the "Runtime Security Policy" node.
  • Expand the "Machine" node.
  • Expand the "Code Groups" node.
  • Expand the "All_Code" node.
  • Select the "LocalIntranet_Zone" node.
  • Click the "Add a Child Code Group" link that appears in the right panel.
  • In the dialog box that appears make sure that "Create a new code group" is selected and enter "Springfield Publications" for the name and enter a meaningful description in the "Description" box or leave it blank.
  • Click the "Next >" button to proceed.
  • On the next screen select "Strong Name" from the drop down list.  Several additional fields will be displayed.
  • Click the "Import..." button and browse to the location to which Prognosticator 2009 was installed and select Prognosticator.exe.  Click "Open" to close the window.

The wizard will automatically complete the "Public Key" field and enter values for "Name" and "Version."  Leave both of the check boxes unchecked.
  • Click the "Next >" button to continue.
On the next screen ensure that "Use existing permission set" is selected and choose "FullTrust" from the drop down list.
  • Click the "Next >" button to continue.
  • Click the "Finish" button to exit the wizard.

Prognosticator 2009 should now run from the network drive.

Alternatively, if you do not have the configuration tool please follow these steps instead.

  • Download this file:  PROG2009Policy.msi (~53K)
  • When prompted, select the option to run (or open) the file.

This installer will adjust the .NET security settings to allow Prognosticator 2009 to run from a network drive.  Unfortunately, there is no progress indicator for the installer so it is difficult to determine if the installation is complete.  After waiting two minutes or so installation success can be verified by opening %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\security.config in a standard text editor (such as notepad) and searching for the text "Springfield Publications" in the file.  If the text is found, installation was successful and Prognosticator 2009 should run successfully.  These steps will need to be repeated for each computer which will run Prognosticator 2009 from a network drive.
